Yea that looks like a small date to me! If it weights 2.5 grams, it's the zinc variety. If it weights around 3.11 it's copper. The mint changed from copper to zinc pennies halfway through 1982 as I understand it. I'm missing all the D varieties for 1982, nice find:)

Greeting nadya:

For that year D for Denver Mint these pennies were made out of both Copper and then later changed over to Zinc Copper Plated.

Specifications for Copper:
Metal Composition: 95% Copper - 5% Tin and Zinc
Diameter: 19 mm
Mass / Weight: 3.11 grams

Specifications for Zinc:
Metal Composition: 97.5% Zinc - 2.5% Copper after 1982
Diameter: 19 mm
Mass / Weight: 2.5 grams

There were no Small Dates produced from the Denver Mint in 1982, however there were some mistakes made on Planchets and I believe it would be best to weigh it and if it weighs 3.2 grams instead of 2.7 it would be the wrong Planchet and may be extremely valuable.

Just the appearance in the picture appears that it was out of circulation for some time and in fairly good condition - did you find it? Maybe in sand?
