A few years back I received this Spanish 20 centimo coin from 1881, and I have been quite perplexed by the fact that there is no listing for it in Krause's standard catalog of the 19th century nor is there one for this coin in Krause's standard catalog of Spain, Portugal, and the New World. Any info on this and the value and scarcity of my coin would be greatly appreciated! Image: Spaintwentycentimos1881obv.jpg98.57 KB Image: Spaintwentycentimos1881rev.jpg86.86 KB

Looks a lot like a Philippines 10 Centimos from the same time period (KM148).

Jays-Dad- hmmm good point! But I don't see any listing for it under Philippines either. I know this coin is real and it is not horribly scarce since I have seen the same date and denomination for sale at dealers' tables before.

onejinx- thanks for the info. I suppose that this was omitted from the 4th edition of Krause's catalog of the 19th century. Is it in the 5th edition? If so, what was the mintage and what are the values? Thanks!

Yes it is in the 5th edition. 5.1920g, 0.8350 Silver 0.1394 oz ASW
Mintage is 1,029,000
F= $15 VF= $30 XF= $55 Unc= $325
There is a 1881/0 which is worth a couple more dollars. But I can't tell from the pics. The mintage listed above includes both as that is how Krause listed it.

Yep, one of several glaring omissions from the 4th edition 1800's Krause, now rectified in the 5th edition. If you buy a coin from the Netherlands East Indies or an Indonesian native state, dated anywhere between 1806 and 1850, you will find a similarly frustrating situation.

For myself, I'm waiting for the sixth, in a couple of years... just in case the 5th has similarly annoying "gaps".

Sap & Jays-Dad- I always say skip an edition or at least by an edition after the next edition is out. That way you always get a good deal. In fact, I went to a discount book store recently where there was a stack of the 4th edition of 1800s Krause for US$5 a piece.
