Last week I posted here that I hade a pile of World coins that I didn't know what to do with. I was told that it makes sense to sell groups of them, but to separate any valuable ones to sell separately.

It was suggested that I make an inventory and post it here hoping you folks could help me pluck out the ones that may be valuable enough to sell separately.

I did my best at grading, but being still new at grading even my US coins, you should all take my grades with a grain of salt.

For those of you that pointed out some of the more valuable coins in my last post, I have saved that info (thank you) and marked my labels accordingly.

This inventory does not include my Canadian Coins. I probably have a couple hundred of those, enough to merit their own inventory.

Coins that are pre-1920 are in red.
I will strike out the coins that you tell me might have sufficient value to sell on their own and/or be silver.

I see nothign very valuable in this lot. Well, yes Newfounland coins are worth something, cameroon franc may be worth $2, silver british shilling.. All the rest are common coins, I think.. Anyway if you would like to sell or swap it to some US coins, drop me a line.
Good luck.

Yeah, I'm afraid I have to agree... Nothing in there that is worth much. I'd offer to take the German stuff, but the postage cost vs worth would probably make it too expensive! Use them as swaps or sell as a lot on ebay or at a coin club... Or just put them in an album and look at them now and then! :)

Krause tends to be off on values for earlier Canada and NFLD coins. According to Charlton's Catalogue, the two NFLD 50c are worth $12-15 in a solid Fine.

I have to agree with everyone else, there didn't look to be anything very valuable in the hoard. There are some coins that might be of interest to people collecting certain countries though.

In your Canadian coins; if you have any one cent coins from 1923-1928, keep those separate. Those cents, if they're in good condition, can fetch a nice pricetag. :)

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I think I will just dump most of them on ebay in a big lot. I don't really want to get involved in World Coins. I already have my work cut out for me learning about the US and Canadian stuff.

Kitty...thanks for the advice an the Canadian coins. I am actually working on those as we speak (er...type). BTW, I looked at your gallery and WOW! You have some really beautiful and unique pieces. I was quite impressed and envious. Nice collection!

You might also consider posting them here in either the sell, trade or auction forums.

Thank you DCV. :) I've spent many years putting my collection together and I'm very proud of it.

I would second Arthrene's advice. Break that lump up into several smaller lumps, maybe based on continent. Then try to sell them here, first. The CCF community is a lot less likely to be a pain in the hind-end when selling as opposed to the average Ebayer, and you don't lose a single cent in fees! Plus, if they don't sell, you can always relist on ebay later.

arthrene/ElleKitty: Thanks for that advice. I haven't done an auction here yet (or any buying, selling or trading for that matter) but this may be a good opportunity to start. I have questions about CCF auctions...can you answer?

I was going to post these questions right in the auction forum, but I thought maybe that was for actual auctions only...not information. I could copy & paste the questions into a new topic and post it there if you tell me that is the correct forum.

My questions are:

Most coins I have seen in auctions here are photographed absent of a slab, 2x2, or any other individual protection. If sold, what is the expected/accepted means of protection? Staple them into 2x2's? put them in little plastic bags?

I don't have Pay Pal. Is that a problem?

Do buyers use checks?

What about insurance...do they normally insure smaller sales like under $100?

Do sellers wait for checks to clear bank before shipping, or do buyer and seller generally ship simultaneously?

I am not really worried about the security so much. Initially, I wouldn't auction off anything very valuable. I just don't want to look like the numis-moron that I am!

Whatever you have on hand, honestly. You're not shipping coins worth a hundred dollars or more here, so whatever you've got is going to be just fine. In the past I've received coins tightly packed in a tupperware container, swathed in bubblewrap and then tied up with strapping tape! It held the coins safely enough and there wasn't enough space for them to shift during shipping. For a large number of coins, it isn't worth your time or effort to put them into 2x2s individually, or even little individual plastic baggies.

Another option I've seen is to wrap each coin in saran/cling wrap, then tape them all to cardboard. The plastic wrap protects the coin from the tape and is safe enough for a short storage time. However, if the coins you're shipping are more valuable, or are in uncirculated condition, then it's definitely worth the effort to put them in a more secure and safe protector before mailing.

Not at all. PayPal is a preferred method of payment these days, but it isn't required. Some people don't feel safe using it, and that's fine. Checks, money orders and coin trades are generally just as acceptable! Heck, I've even done a direct deposit into someone's bank account once, for a coin!

Quote:
Do buyers use checks?
Only if you'll accept them. This runs a risk of extra fees and waiting time on the personal check to clear.

Quote:

This one depends on where you're planning on shipping. Inside the US, it's a good idea only if the value of the package is over $100. Outside of the US, I never ever ever insure the package anymore, because that's a surefire indicator to postal thieves that whatever is inside is worth stealing! I hate that things are this way, but they are. Another hint; if shipping outside of the US, and you are required to use a Customs Declaration form, never ever ever put "coins" or numismatic" on the label. I prefer the accurate but misleading use of "hobby supplies."

Quote:

If you do accept a check, wait for it to clear before sending the merchandise. State this in the auction in bold lettering if you decide you want to take personal checks.

Hope that helps!

No worries! Believe me, there's plenty of corners of Numismatism that I don't even qualify for Numismoron regarding... and the shipping advice has come from experience. ;)

And you are more than welcome. I'm pleased that I was able to help.
