Please check this PSGS-slabbed MS63 1875 3C & its obverse discoloration.

Before the initial submission I was tempted to use allegedly innocuous acetone to remove the dark obverse stain. However, I hesitated since it was obviously an MS-type coin whose numeric designation was unknown at the time.

Now I am fortunate enough to have PCGS reverse their opinion and reholder the coin with the initially petitioned MPD FS-301 varietal classification.

Here are my questions:

1) What exactly should I ask for on the 'submission' form & how much should it cost me for stain removal considering that PCGS is picking up the tab for their mistake of missing the variety catch?

2) From the photos created by PCGS does this darkened substance appear like something that could easily be at least 80% removed?

3) Compared to its current untouched state should this coin cleaned-up by PCGS to at least an 80% stain removal improvement bring its resale price significantly closer to the approx. $ 425 on the PCGS price guide @ MS63?

One last concern I failed to express:

4) Has there ever been a case when a PCGS-slabbed coin came back with a lower grade as a result of this company cleaning/conserving their own slabbed coin? If this is the case, what % likelihood would this 3C coin have after cleaning for a reassigned grade lower than its predecessor?

i believe those stains should clean up very nicely. It appears to be surface staining, and not anything that has ate it's way into the coin.

You're covered by the guarantee if that happens since they're the ones doing the work

It looks like that stain would likely come off with acetone, but I wouldn't have them do anything more. I would think it would be much more attractive and desirable without the stain.
Rest in Peace

In this instance conservation by PCGS would be recommended.

You'll pay whatever the normal upcharge is for conservation.

https://www.PCGS.com/restoration

Call customer service first, however, and confirm you can combine the services.

Oh and to the other question, certainly there are coins that have been graded lower once conserved. It depends on what is revealed below the previously hidden surface.

For example, putty covering a major ding.
