1971 D Washington Quarter Variety/Error?

Canadian coins Valued Member Canada 142 Posts	Posted 04/08/2018 11:14 am Hello, I have been working my way through the US coins in my collection. Identifying the varieties, errors and mints. I have come across this 1971 D Washington quarter. I have one other Washington quarter to compare it to and I see some differences. Specifically, "In God We Trust" seems to be "doubled" or "fat", for lack of the proper words. My cameras zoom capabilities are not the greatest to take quality photos of specific letters but have included a cropped photo that I think shows "doubled" or "fat" lettering. I will adhere to the professional opinions before making a conclusion. Note that Variety Vista doesn't list any DDO on 1971-D http://varietyvista.com/09b%20WQ%20...Listings.htm When I say spread, what am I talking about? 1970-D FS-101: While it show more on the date, you can see a bit of spread on the motto: http://varietyvista.com/09b%20WQ%20...0DDDO001.htm 1976-D FS-101 Note the spread on this die compared with a normal coin? http://varietyvista.com/09b%20WQ%20...6DDDO001.htm When looking at the link you can see how much spread was on other devices as well. So with out a spread, it maybe an over all flattening during the 40+years out in circulation. (Part of the altering of the normal devices can also be coin wear. A factor to consider on circulated coins. So I feel your coin is not a doubled die. sorry Report this Post to the Staff

The collection of coins that I am going through has many errors coins and alot of different varieties. It has had me thinking that a coin was kept in the collection because of an error or rare variety. I will have to resign to the fact that some of these coins are regular strike with no errors lol I appreciate the images accompanied with the explanation.
