Hey I have a 1982 D small date copper penny weighing in at 3.1 grams or at least I believe that's what I got. And I have a 1944 penny that weighs 2.7 grams but is not magnetic so I don't think it is steel. How can I find out if what I have is legit?

Mike's coin looks like it was dipped into acid that reduced the surface/weight of the coin. Note the weakened rims. Coin was altered, was normal when it was struck:

The 1982-D appears to be a large date, so this is a normal coin. The 1944 appears to have been corroded somehow, perhaps an acidic solution of some sort, so that would explain the loss of weight.
