Hi does anyone know what kind of tool was used to punch this A in the obverse. It looks like the a was struck on top of something else from the raises under the a. Someone told me it was a metal punch set. I dont think someone from 1932 and up would do this, so for my second question could it be from a pre 1900s tool before the coin started becoming of value? Thanks everyone

A letter stamp was used to punch that "A".

Just a counterstamp pushing up the metal around the punched mark.

Pretty much so - the counterstamp looks recent - now if it was an old one it may actually up the premium on the coin if you could verify the stamp!

I'm not an expert on metal punches, tools or fonts. It depends on what you mean by modern tools. Did it happen yesterday or 186 years ago? I'm guessing it happened years ago. Assuming it's an authentic Capped Bust, I can't see someone punching it in recent years and degrading it's value.

It's a counterstamp.

Hopefully the Indianapolis Indians beat both of you, even though they're a minor league team.
