I have received a piece of special glass from rocky and asked to try axil lighting. So I'm going to post pics of coins defused at the light which I have been doing and then axil lighting with different blubs. My ? is what type of blub do you use? I think I still like my defused at the light better, both have been adjusted. Can get the luster look on the axil lighting. These are 100W and 40W blubs only did cropping

mcshilling very well done. but with axial lighting. there is a trade off when it comes to lighting. mike I have a ballast coming. I have found a bulb. that is 100 percent pure white light. if this bulb works I will share the results. the only problem if this bulb does work for axial lighting. one would have to rebuild the electrical mount for the bulb. but I will tell anyone how to do it if you would want to know. mike I like your coin picture with the diffused light totally excellent.

yes mike stick with the glass position on the left. the one on the right is showing the anti reflective coating. mike if you can you need. to go an buy a standard 60 watt frosted bulb. make sure it is one of the older incandescent bulb. mike they are all being removed from the shelves in the stores. I went bought a sleeve of each wattage 40 watt 60 watt and 100 watt. these are not being replaced. all lights coming into the stores are all LEDS. ok mike here is the same glass as you have now. the axial lighting is a 60 watt frosted bulb. what I do is position. one jansjo lamps next to my enlarger lens. I pointed at the center of the coin through the glass here is the results. hope this helps

OK rocky, I went to 3 stores yesterday and didn't find any older style 60W bulbs. Will try again this week.
Pic looks good rocky, will try.

Here are a few pictures I took last night. Ive posted them in a side by side view of raw picture / edited. I use paint.net to edit and all I edit is a bit of contrast and saturation. I had to borrow a camera to take a picture of my camera lol Here is my set-up..... Please note.....As you can see I have 4 jansjos but I DID NOT use them! The only light I used was the desk lamp. The only time I may use the jansjos is taking pictures of a dark coin such as a old penny. ****The position of the light is key!**** I use a plain piece of glass at a 45 degree angle....I don't know why it works but it does, I get a much better picture shooting through the glass than not

That set up is almost identical to mine. I can't believe that is only a 28w bulb. Well more practice today, thanks Brent.

One other thing I do is I try not to fit the whole coin in the shot. This allows me to move the coin around a bit to find the sweet spot....hope that makes sense. Here is a picture I did....lots of room around the coin so I can move it around the frame if needed. I found its easier to move the coin around to find the light instead of moving the light. This way, I rarely need to do any adjusting to the light between coins. Here is the same coin after I crop and edit it....

Honestly, you haven't found the sweet spot yet. The one on the right is close....just move the light around a bit

The axial image has very low contrast, which is a typical problem for axial light. The darkest blacks in the axial image are ~32, so the image has lost 5 stops out of a total of 8.
