The true question is....which picture most resembles your coin? I try to get a image that is true to the image being taken. Without seeing what the coin looks like, its hard to say which one is better

I think the German adjusted is close, if you have a mint 2017 .50 piece that is what I used.

Not a fan of taking pictures in 2x2s but all in all getting better. Keep practising with the lighting and you'll have it. Penny has a little to much light going on....try a slightly different angle or back the light up a bit

What do you have your white balance setting on in live view? I use Tungsten.

My white balance is in custom, Shooting mode - blub - I can't change Image recording quality on mine I find Raw + aL. ( not an a but)
Settings may be different because you have XSi and mine is XS

I have a question for those of you taking photos through a 45 degree plain glass. I built a setup that I found on youtube where light comes from the rear shining through a piece of frosted glass. The photo is taken shooting downward through a piece of plain glass. My problem is I get a lot of reflection off of the 45 degree glass. Have either of you run into this problem? Unfortunately I'm using a cell phone or a point and shoot camera so my results are not great to start with.

You need something very black behind the glass (opposite the incoming light), to minimize reflections off the back side of the glass. I use some sort of flocking material from Thor Labs (I think).
