Hello all,

I have an 1891 Indian Head penny, and am wondering why it is not the common copper color, but instead is grey?

Did they make steel Indian Head pennies?

Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

Your coin may have been plated or changed color from environmental factors.

If you can, weigh it and post a photo. We'll be able to tell you more.

@ant888, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes pics would be very helpful as there are several ways that copper coins can be treated to change their color. As far as I know, it is impossible for this coin to have been minted in steel, but you could always check that quickly with a magnet.

Pictures won't tell us much of anything other than the fact that the color is not normal, which you have already told us. Most likely the coin is either been harshly cleaned in some way or has been plated. Better information would be to give us the weight of the coin to see if it matches the mint specifications. And specifications that Silver surfer gave you earlier are wrong. Those specifications are for the 1859 to 1864 Indian Head cents.

Could be almost anything. However, there is no known history of a Silver one, Steel one or anything that would make it look like Steel. Maybe if your lucky someone plated it with Silver.
