Hey all

I have not seen any info on varieties for the new 2018 series. I don't know if that is because there are none (yeah, right), or if they just haven't been posted yet.

I have 2 coins here, "A" and "B". Both are 2018 P cents. Coin "B" appears to me to have slight thickening of the IGWT and BERTY.

However, coin "A" appears to have slightly thicker digits in the date.

On the reverses, they both appear to have moderate thickening on the USA, but in different places. I know that both are affected by the finger feeder. These both came out of BU rolls this weekend.

I placed the images side/side for easier comparison.

Thanks for looking.

I do see the difference, but it looks pretty normal to me. Different die states I would think. Your pics are great, what is your set up.

Excellent article, Crazybo. I had to read the entire post. There is some good info to be had.

Way to burst a persons bubble.

I was actually wondering if it had to do with different die stages. Keep looking.

@John1 - I have a 5MP USB continuous zoom scope with up to 75% digital zoom. I have 2 light sources (three four if you count the room light and the window). One light is a florescent and the other is a LED. I have even used an additional small LED flashlight on occasion as it can be directed parallel to the surface of the coin. Lighting is tricky! I have learned a great deal about what is NOT doubling and shadows can be a nightmare. I am always shifting the positions of the lamps to get the best shot. (This is probably not the best setup, but it works for me.)

OK. Now looking at your coin, the coin 'A' is showing Machine Doubling. Note the little striation lines on the 'LI' on LIBERTY. This happen when a die moves altering the devices. The striation lines are from the edge of the die area being pushed over the newly struck devices. Those lines are always a bad sign for a coin. Coin 'B' is widened because of the 'LIB' area being hit. You can see where something slid over these devices. The vertical lines. So not a winner on either, but a pair of educational pieces. Now you can tell what a coin looks like that was damaged after the strike by the machine, and in circulation (or PSD) with coin contact. Coin 'B' is also showing some MD on the date as well.

Thanks, Coop. I knew that the "LI" on both coins was from some sort of PSD. It was the thickening of mainly the GOD WE that I was asking about. Looking back at those right now, I do see striation lines just beginning to appear towards the rim. OK
