When I am seperating copper lincoln cents from zinc lincoln cents, I can tell the metal content without looking at the date 100% of the time. The pre 82's have a more distinct, deeper strike than the zinc lincoln cents. I was wondering if everyone else here on the forum have noticed this. Otherwise I will consider myself some sort of Lincoln Cent prodigy.lol -PP

Yes, others have commented on that too, although I must admit they both sound very similar to me. I must be tone deaf for Lincolns.
On the other hand, I can tell a silver from a cupro-nickel equivalent coin with my eyes closed--just by smell. Weird huh?

I can't claim 100% but I bet I could hit a solid 85-90. There is definitely a different "look" to them.

Most of the zinc cents have very flat looking detail.

They actually changed the portrait somewhere along the line to account for the lighter strike, but I'm not sure when... pretty subtle.

i can usually tell by patina, although I get fooled every once in a while.

That's nothin! I can tell what a brand of Cookie-N-Cream icecream is by its smell

I can't figure out the ring thing either. I'm waiting for a machine to be devised that can sort them for you...cause I'm lazy

I have noticed that the Zincolns, especially just before the turn of the century, have a much lower relief. My guess is that it was done to protect the integrity of the copper coating.

BTW, it was not that long ago someone was boasting (maybe in jest) about how they could taste the difference.

I can tell whether a 1982 is zinc or copper by sucking on them. Seriously, try it next time. The copper 1982 is much sweeter than the zinc 1982 which is bitter to the taste.

Sometimes I take a whole fistful of pennies, stick them in my mouth, and seperate copper from zinc from spitting out all the zinc ones. Its a cool trick, maybe I could post a youtube video.

I'm going to guess that you're not a fan of the "upright citizen's brigade" TV show, eh?

It seems to me that from '96-'03 or so there were a lot of pennies minted with just miserably weak strikes... hardly any relief at all.
