@TB, first welcome to CCF. Second, nice use of the coffee emoji--it is new here and it is nice to see folks using it.

With regard to your coin, posting in this thread a pic of the other side would be useful. Finally, I am going to recommend to the mods that your thread get moved over to the world coin section as this section is technically for coins from before 1600 AD. The world coin section has several folks who know about cobs and should be able to weigh in on what you've got--I'm not sure that they spend much time here and will be less likely to see and comment on your thread if it stays here.

It is based on a Felipe III 1/2 real, but it doesn't look like a real real.

How did you date this to 1617? 1/2 reals don't have dates until the mid 1600's.

I can read Phillipus III perfectly around the rim. I have never seen this on any cob except for royals (see sedwick link below).

Here is one minted during Felipe III's reign for reference

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces57640.html

Sedwick has a 1716 1/2 real royal for sale currently, which shows the date and full king's name.

I see the 1617 date now. It's on the wrong side of the coin.

The dates on most 1/2 real cobs are underneath the king's monogram, on the other side of the coin. They only show the last 3 digits of the date, and are very crudely done. The royals have the whole date, to the left of the king's monogram, as in the Mexico example I linked above.

Compare the 1725 Limas in Sedwick auction 21 (lots 827 and 828). Sorry I can't link it, but you can see what the date usually looks like.

I don't know exactly what you have Thebutcher but it doesn't look like any cob I've ever seen.
