Hi - I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland and have just been given a 1966 Canadian silver dollar by an elderly friend and can vouch for its provenance - can any of your experienced collectors tell me if it a small bead or large bead coin. I have scanned it in and drawn an line through the I and it does appear to point directly to a bead. I have enclosed a picture of the coin. Thanks in anticipation

The gentleman who owns the coin was working in Canada at the time and was given the coin when he was returning home in 1966. I would be grateful if you could explain your response and also the criteria by which you ascertain the classification

485 pieces released out the back door of the Hull mint . All ended up with one dealer in Eastern Canada .
Then they were disbursed amongst favoured dealers throughout the rest of Canada . Coins sold for a huge premium right from the get go. The Coin was not available at any bank or commercial outlet in 1966. This issue is as misunderstood as the 1936 Dot 1 and 10 Cents 1936.
Small bead dollar diagnostics include Prooflike Obverse , Business Strike Reverse. The best description is a contrived Mule .
A pleasing example can easily sell for 4000 USD or more. Hope this helps.
The subject of the 1966 Small bead Dollar has been mentioned many times on the forum. Type in 1966 Small beads Silver Dollar under the SEARCH tab . You will find more info.

Are the gouges across the face something that should be expected for this coin?

If this went "out the back door" does this not make it an illegal coin to own. I was told coins like that can be confiscated by the mint as they were never meant for circulation.

Many thanks for all your information - it is all very confusing what with "the I in REGINA pointing to a bead " etc. but I bow to your superior knowledge. As regards to the gouges they were on the dollar when the gentleman received the gift - and he assumed that it had occurred when the coin was mounted on a ring of some kind to turn it into a key-ring.
