Good Fine, (British grade).
Value? nominally, a retail value of One pound.
A good pickup out of a junk box for a nickel!
Probably found it's way to America in the pocket of a British migrant, after the First World war.

Birth date of my maternal grandfather. He migrated to Australia in 1919, and by 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, was employing nearly 250 very grateful people.

He had a brother in the British Army,(name Edwin Hansor), who was killed on 26th March, 1918.
My sister will be visiting his grave site in Dernancort War Cemetery in France, in September this year, just over 100 years after his battlefield death.

Yes - a nice coin and I would agree - Good Fine on UK Standards. Would sell GBP1 to 2 on ebay depending on your luck.

For many of the years for farthings there are lots of variations possible that can push the price up substantially, but 1884 is a straightforward year - just one type given Freeman number 553.

Why not start a collection of farthings? Most can be got in reasonable condition for only a few dollars each.

sel_69l -EH! It is a wonderful coin and I have a few from my Daddy who was Canadian Expeditionary Force in the War 1915-1917. HE and his brothers wound up in Belgium. It was not nice. Hold a coin like that in your hand can really evoke some memories. PRICELESS.

I have on numerous occasions plucked really nice British coins, including uncirculated Victoria & Edward VII farthings, from "bargain" bins. Such here in the U.S. constitutes a collecting backwater that evidently few dealers find it worthwhile to bother with.

On the Sheldon scale, your specimen is solidly XF, and with that trace of original luster, if "market" graded probably claws its way up into the low AU range. Great find.

However all the high points look shiny on the picture so maybe had a heavy rub.

Agree that it's better than gF.
No great value but more than 5c for sure.
