A few of us in our coin club are scratching our heads wondering about this 1853 "2 cent" silver. The camera we used de-focused when trying to take an image of the full coin, but we will try to get additional full-coin photos posted. Meanwhile, your comments and theories (and guesses) are invited to explain the missing "I" on this coin!

Could it have been a grease-filled die? I agree that it is a little unusual for just one of the design elements to be so totally un-struck up while the others look fine. Another possibility would be tooling, but I'm seeing absolutely no tooling marks.

Looks like an amazing Grease Fill to me, right at the center area of the die.

Super cool find.
