It's probably more a factor of what gets consigned, there are lots and lots of nice shiny ones, but I looked through 15 pages of them and almost every one that sticks out as overly dark is a proof. Struck me as odd.

You did miss my point. Because of the highly polished fields, picture optics "sees" dark. It is why mirrors have a dark surface on their back, only in opposition to the refraction principle of light. It is all in the lighting, so difficult with proofs, which is why the darker they are, the more polished the areas.
