Now that is interesting with a proto rim, but it is out of place even for a cap effect, Damaged die perhaps?. Giving the experts a call.

All I see is a Die Deterioration from a worn die and Post Mint Damage from being covered in dirt and from being circulated. BTW, it's not a Capped Die. See error-ref.com to see the differences between a Capped Die and being Struck Through a Capped Die. http://www.error-ref.com/obversediecap/ and http://www.error-ref.com/struck_thr...age_die_cap/ Your coin isn't a Capped Die nor Struck Through a Capped Die.

Stained coin struck with a worn die. Not a capped die.

There's no stains. No heat signs. Just zinc and copper plating. The zinc is, in a couple of places, got a little dirt. I am thinking the worn die also, but, not ruling out the capped die either. I am seeking the Pro's, to help figure out what caused this.

That's what I just said. It's dirt on your coin. It was struck with a worn die. We are trying to help you out.

Die Deterioration. (Worn die)

Quote:
It's not unusual for copper-plated zinc cents to develop semi-circular ridges just inside the design rim. Although they seldom form a complete circle, these acknowledged manifestations of Die Deterioration were nevertheless called "ridge rings" by longtime Clearinghouse columnist Eric Von Klinger.

when we see this so commonly on the 1980' zinc cents, they are not a premium coin. The cheap dies they us now don't look good for long. The mint is concerned about getting coins for commerce.we are the ones looking for the perfect coin, or the error coins. But most coins are just good for circulation. That is what the mint is creating. New ones think every coin is a collectible. They look hard to find stuff that is not there. After a couple of hundred thousands, you realize what I'm saying. You learn what deserves a better look, and what should be thrown back. Pretty soon you will realize that one hundred cents you've set aside, is jus worth one dollar. But the keepers are the ones only a few save. Why? Because the know what it is. That is my purpose here. To help those who want to know is the keepers and the ones to throw back.
