I picked up this coin "on spec" today and I would like to ask help in identifying this and in unravelling the story that it has to tell.

I call this the "sands of time" coin. It looks just like some mysterious writing that has been written into beach sand and that the tide is slowly obliterating...

Thanks for your help

Squire

Nice coin, undoubtedly with quite a story to tell! I can say it's not from India, my guess is Iran or Afghanistan, though I'm not knowledgeable enough on those to further identify it. A weight and diameter would help.

Hi there, I just started browsing this forum and happened upon your thread. I wanted to let you know that the writing is most likely Arabic, possibly Farsi ("Persian"). At the very least, Arabic letters are used I can only identify individual letters and have never really been good at reading it in that style. Can't identify the country or even region because in older times Arabic was used in not only the Arab world, but in Iran and Turkey as well. Best of luck!

I would guess perhaps Timurid or Safavid. Not a match, but something of this ilk: https://cNGCoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=347944

Thanks Bob L, Seeker55 and truthandreality2 for your helpful comments

The coins diameter varies from 20 to 21mm.
I have not weighed the coin yet but it does have some "weight in the hand" so it could be silver.
I note that the LHS picture of the coin is probably upside down. I have posted it correctly below
I also note that the script shown on the RHS of the coin appears to be surroundined by a "flower like / circular" frame, particularly appearent on the top left and central parts of the coin.

....I think I am getting closer now

See https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/pa...Default.aspx

The identification of the flower like circular frame on one side of the coin helped. Also the coin is about the right size.

The mint and date are in the flower-like frame. Looks like Irawan (Yerevan) 942h.
