Here's something you don't see every day. It is an Ultra-Rare 1894 Sitka Alaska Type V Postal Note.

These were considered legal tender (payable to bearer) for a period of 3 months from date of issue, so some paper money experts consider them a form of currency. Many were saved as souvenirs. That is why most surviving examples were issued for amounts of only 1 or 2 cents each.

There were only 3 of these known from anywhere in Alaska until this one surfaced at auction last month, making it the 4th from Alaska and the 2nd from Sitka.

Wikipedia has an excellent article on Postal Notes if you want to know more about them.

Thanks for sharing.

It's amazing what some Postal notes sell for. I was the underbidder on this Tampa Postal note at 3K back in 2015.

Yes, postal notes are scarce and relatively expensive with most selling in the $100 to $2,000 range. Judging by the sales price of the Tampa example, Florida notes can be considered very scarce.

HA.com has sold many hundreds of Postal Notes, many with hammer prices in excess of $1k each. I did not see any Alaska postal notes sold on their website, which incidentally is a fantastic resource.

According to the 2013 Official Black Book Price Guide to United States Paper Money, Alaska postal notes were valued from $9.7k to $10k each at that time. That book lists one postal note from Kodiak and one from Sitka (the other known Sitka example.) Other sources suggest there is also a postal note extant from Douglas, Alaska.

It would be quite a challenge to put together a collection with examples from every state or territory where they were issued.

If you are an SPMC member, there is a nice article about this note that has appeared in SPMC's Paper Money magazine March/April 2019 issue (Whole No. 320). I wonder if any other scarce postal notes exist?

I'll second that article on postal notes in SPMC - its definitely worth reading, especially if you've not known anything about them before - like me!
