I've got a lot of extra foreign coins sitting around, coins that I have so many copies of that I would not even bother putting in my collection (just how many Bulgaria, 1992 1 Lev coins could a collection need? I think I kept 7 or 8 BU copies, but I still have 50 or so more. Lots of other coins of a similar bulk manner too, hundreds of copies of some types.) I was thinking about doing some fun things with them.
1. Taking some to parks and playgrounds and sprinkling them around so little kids could find them and get hooked on a new hobby (my son would love to help with this, but he wants to keep all of them).
2. Using them in my fishtank in place of standard gravel. Does anyone know if coins would produce toxic water for my freshwater fish?
3. Other fun ideas?

I think option #1 has the answer... let your son keep them all!

Why not? He will either lose them, keep them, sell them, or trade them. No matter what he does, its a better place than the briny depths of your fish tank!

1. Punch or drill holes in them and use them for washers
2. Give them to pan-handlers looking for some "spare change"
3. "Make wishes" at ponds and fountains.
4. Super glue them to sidewalks and watch people try to pry them up.
5. Make jewelry for family and friends

I like your idea of sprinkling them around for youngsters to find and develop an interest in.

1. Trade/sell them here or elsewhere to purchase other coins
2. Let your son have one or two of each type
3. Let your son take some to school and share them there

I like the sprinkling idea too and ichirensha's idea of gluing them to the sidewalk (lol!).

I laugh because when I see a quarter glued to the ground I am Always the one to finally get it loose....because hey...it's a quarter

You could also sell them, or better yet use them for trades here on the forum.

Or do a cool contest

I hate it when people pull that trick !.......I don't like getting embarrased in public !!......and if no one is looking......I'll get a dang jackhammer and get that quarter no matter how it is attached !!

I would just let your son inherit them someday.......as everything is "Euro" now....put two or three decades on these coins and you may be surprised at the value increase on some of them !!........don't give em' up man !!

Just keep it in an airtight container so as not to accumulate dirt, wo knows someday value would pick-up.

Don't put them in the fish tank. Not good for the fish. Most definitely not.

Fish tank is a very bad idea. metal is very toxic to fish. but if you like them half eaten floaters go for it.
(half eaten floaters are dead fish)

I was kinda worried about the half eaten floater problem so I didn't risk it. Maybe some fen shui? Put them on a decorative platter with a little Bonsai plant and a little rake to move them around. Maybe use them in with the rocks around the decorative edging of the house? Come on, something useful for a big jug of junk! I think I'll have to come up with some way to make sure kids get them. Use them as party favors at my kids next b-day! Give them to a teacher to use as "prizes" for good behavior. I'll bet a little baggy with 10-12 coins would be a well sought after prize by little kids.

I like the Panhandler idea...but make sure you are moving away quickly so you don't get hit with the coin when they see what they have(hehe) You could also use them as an addition to the tip you leave at a restaurant.

I laughed so hard at the panhandler thing I almost fell over and choked at the same time. My wife thought I was having a heart attack!

Definitely don't put them in your fish tank. The heavy metals in most coins will leach into your tank and cause some serious issues for your fish. If you have snails / shrimp or other invertebrates, ANY amount of copper will kill them (even as little as having copper piping somewhere in your house and using faucet water without treating it).

As far as all those European coins, I'm with the others here who voted on stashing a good amount away to see if they increase in value later (so you can pass on to your son). And I think trading the rest here / holding a contest would be cool =)
