If you have a coin that has an error...does it have to have all the markers or does what stage the coin is in matter?

Different stages will have different markers. (hence different stages). Usually the markers from the previous stage will be on the latter stage, but not always. Some subtle markers can be worn off the die during use.

11997755 answered that very well. On Hub doubling including DDO / DDR and RPM's, since they are effected upon the die itself, the "error/variety" will be seen and fully recognized throughout the progressive stages of die use/wear. There will be very slight changes as areas wear or are polished away but this is slight. Markers come and go with progression and can be used as ID purposes but only as the additional means, not as a strict adherence to the specific type. Take this die chip progression for instance and the noted changes:Question-About-Markers

Depending on what type of markers you are talking about.
Die cracks progresses to get worse as the die is continued to be used. They do extend. If there is no image, you have to be careful. The location of the die crack might be on a different area of a device. So an image is important.
Die scratches out in the open fields flatten with time. They will remain strong inside of a device. They R.E.M. a while next to devices. New die scratches can be added over older ones, then again fade.
Keep in mind also, an opposite die may be replaced. If your coin doesn't have a marker, it might be from a fresher die state than an example shown. Or, maybe your coin is not from that die pair?
