Nickels are not plated, so there is no way that could happen. It's Environmental Damage (ED).

I have looked at over 100k nickels and you'll find this enviro damage quite often.

Spent some time in yer car cupholder, didn't it?. That's what causes most like this, mixed with dirt, soda, coffee and other coin reactions...just normal for what appears to be a circa 1990's-2003 coin. We like to see pictures here, we're those nuts that love to look at those boring travel picture slide shows! Lol!
