The "D" on this 1978 penny looks like it was double struck! First backwards then horizontal. Can someone tell me what I got?

Just a few points of damage to the coin, and the brain trying to see something that is not there. It is not a Mint mark. Too large. If it were, then all the area would be raised. But look at the mint mark below that area. If it were a mint mark, then it would be that size.
Rest in Peace

Coop nailed it, as always. But I can see why you would ask.

Cents are not annealed. Copper is a soft metal. As well as zinc. Colors come from their surroundings. I have a proof cent that was stored in its cellophane, it turned silver in color. I took out of the cello so
I know it was not altered. Just toned that color.
