Just a few points of damage to the coin, and the brain trying to see something that is not there. It is not a Mint mark. Too large. If it were, then all the area would be raised. But look at the mint mark below that area. If it were a mint mark, then it would be that size.
Cents are not annealed. Copper is a soft metal. As well as zinc. Colors come from their surroundings. I have a proof cent that was stored in its cellophane, it turned silver in color. I took out of the cello so I know it was not altered. Just toned that color.
