The Red Book divides proof sets into four distinct periods: vintage (1936-1942), classic (1950-1964), SMS (1965-1967) and modern (1968-present). The SMS and modern issues are easy to find and in some cases can be purchased for close to issue price. The classic years are also available, but can be expensive (over $100) prior to ~1958. You're going to have to look for the vintage ones. And it's going to cost you over $1000 each in most cases.

I've seen sets from 1950 to present for sale on several large online dealers. I've never seen the older ones - then again, I can't afford them so I'm not really looking . Good luck and if you end up getting some of the vintage sets, please post images.

Just a quick "chip-in".......The 2007 Blue Book has the 1936 proof set .....issue price $1.89....and "current value" listed at....$4,250.00.........the 1937 proof set about half that......later years under a thousand each for about a decade or so, then much cheaper.......keep in mind though that this is "Blue Book" prices......which is what a "dealer" might pay....NOT what "you" would pay...which would likely be considerably more than these prices listed in there for anything.......Blue Books and Redbooks are NOT good price guides for many many reasons.......but it's something to gauge by........it's the "other" information contained therein that you use it for obviously.
Anyways......just a quick "chip-in"......

There are several places to shop the proof sets you are looking for here are a few links you can try:
http://fastcoin.com/proofnprestige.htm
http://www.usstatequarters.com
http://www.acoinvault.com/Proof%20sets%20page.htm
there are several others I have bought from all three of these sites and had no problem.

You might find that you will get the best pricing by buying a few sets from each site or other sites you may find on the web. The one thing I always wanted to be sure was included was the certificate of authenticity and the original gov. packaging.

Good Luck
