Hey all, picked this up yesterday and was hoping I got a fair price for it at $40. Someone mentioned it might be an N9 Variety which is scarce, so I'm hoping that increases the value. What do you guys think it grades at and what do you think the value is?

Thank you all so much

The very black uneven patina is an indication of corrosion that would preclude a straight grade. No harm would happen from a pure acetone bath, but it is unlikely to improve these surfaces.

It's getting close to 200 years old so it carries a lot of history.

I think I just need a new camera, the coin doesn't look like that in reality. The color is brown to the eye, and only looks like the picture when directly reflected against light. Any specific cameras you would recommend that are perfect for coin pictures/studying/magnification/etc?

This is what the coin looks like without a white backdrop, which I think is messing up the image quality:

I'm amazed at how well my iPhone captures the coin in hand and focused enough to get the details sufficient for grading within a step, and also capture its color in hand as well.

I used to photograph with an old Nikon (gotta have that macro Tulip!) mounted with different types of lighting. The details were best on AU and above coins, but the color was never quite right for circulated coins. An old Microtek scanner is my go-to for circulated coins in slabs, as they look exactly as in hand and focus great for details. I even keep an old computer with XP for the driver and recently found a brand new Microtek for $5 on ebay as a back up (-:
