Hi All,
It hasn't been confirmed with photos yet but they say the new 2006 $1 unc coin is going to be celebrating 50 years of television.

What a neat coin! In 2003, the U.S celebrated 75 years of T.V. Great Britain celebrated 75 years of T.V in 2001. Regular broadcasting began prior to WWII, and was mostly stopped world wide by the war. In 1946 T.V broadcating and the sale of T.V'S boomed. You had to be wealthy because a set could go for as much as $750.00!!! This era ushered in the true electronic versions of Television. Here is a couple of great links about T.V History. I must say I love the theme, but the design is a bit ordinary.
Won't stop me buying it though. I am hoping for a "TV" mintmark on the coin, just for something different.

Austria stuck a commemorative to TV last year with a bimetallic silver and niobium coin. The niobium was purple!!! What a beautiful coin it is and the third niobium in the series. The first two coins (2003 and 2004) were blue and green but that purple last year gets the blue ribbon in my book! Germany has also done a tribute to 50 years of TV.

There is a furore downunder from members of the Aussie Forum who bought this coin.Main bone of contention is the very poor quality of the coins struck on blanks sourced from overseas.I have not received mine yet so I cannot comment. My advise is to wait until the dust settles before making your purchase.

I was at the mint today and minted my own. The quality to me is ok. Even though I expect a lot from an uncirculated coin the mints view on the issue is two fold. If you want a perfect coin buy a proof (now that is understanding of them!!!!)
The second issue is that they are made the same way a circulation coins. As such they are not treated as a true collector coins should be. If they were then the mint believes the cost would increase dramatically to reflect increased manpower and wastage (due to imperfect coins). This would place the price outside of the price range of the customers they are targeting (makes sense to me!!!)

So Bigfella just how many of those coins did the Mint let you make? Do they have restictions or can you buy up what ever you feel like minting?

There is no restriction on the number you can mint. However, I have to disagree with Beigfella, The quality of the coins is woeful. There appears to be rust on the inside rim on both obverse and reverse. I initialy thought it might be oil or grease from the minting process, so I tried a degreaser on one of them. It didn't come off, nor would after vigorous rubbing with a soft cloth. The coin rims are definitely pitted with what looks like rust...all 20 of them.

Nothing more heartbreaking, at least to a coin collector, than to get a NEW coin that looks like its been around for twenty years or buried for a few days! Man, what a bummer!

Yass welcome to the forum.
I haven't received mine yet so I can't comment. From what I am hearing though there needs to be a happy middle point for happiness on both sides.

All I can see from the issue of such coins is the number of errors that is going to emanate from it....I am not complaining...I collect errors and varieties...[:p]

I agree with your sentiment, but in this case its the actual blank that is at fault. The rims are pitted (or marked if you prefer). The actual minting process is ok. If you ignore the rims, the rest of the coin is quite attractive. I suppose the one good feature will be that the coins may well be identifiable as having come from the RAM MYO press (unless of course all the blanks for future mm releases come from the same Korean provider).
