My son just sold his first coin on ebay and to now has to ship it and insure it. It is a gold coin I gave him to sell and it sold for about $500.

When you are shipping one coin (or a small quantity of them), Is it best to use a small bubble envelope?..What size? Or should he pack it in a box?

I assume it is less expensive to ship the bubble envelope, but does it provide adequate pretection for the coin?

I guess what I am asking is what will the buyer be expecting that will give him a good feeling about how the coin was shipped?

Also, he advertised free shipping and insurance. What type of USPS service (express, regular...etc.) would we be requesting when we take it to the Post Office and roughly what should it cost? He didn't promise overnight or anything special, just free shipping and insurance. I just want his buyer to be satisfied and to have his expectations met.

Thanks,

Doug

Doug as you are in the USA you have the ability to use priority mail.
bubble wrapping the coin is OK but is the coin in a 2x2 or capsule first to prevent damage to it?

Protect the coin.
then you can use a flat rate US$4.80 priority mail envelope.
Then you have the option of insuring or obtaining proof of delivery etc.

However do not tell the post office what is in the envelope.

If they ask state metallic sample or collectable. Never mention coin or gold.
Good luck

I'd probably prefer a box (just the standard free priority mail ones) than a bubble envelope. I've had a lot of experience with plastic items cracking while in bubble envelopes and I assume you'll be using a plastic coin holder of some kind.

I put ALL the coins I sell in a coin flip if raw and then a small bubble mailer. Then I put the mailer into a USPS Priority mail 0-1096S mailing box. USPS gives you these boxes for free. The coins usually weigh 8oz or less so Priority mail shipping is $4.80 within the U.S. and you get delivery conformation with it.

I have a lot of used bubble mailers that I get when I buy coins so I use these to protect the coin before putting them into the box.

Theres nothing worse than receiving a coin you purchased(even inexpensive coins)sliding around loose in a bubble mailer.

OK..I think I am getting it. Sorry, I need spoon-feeding on this, but so far my son has a 100% ebay rating and I don't want him to mess it up on my advice.

The coin is raw. I already have it in a mylar flip.
If I am understanding correctly, I should:
-put it in a bubble mailer
-then put it in a Priority Mail box (with whatever additional packing is necessary to keep it from moving around)
-then take it to the PO to ship Priority Mail...ask for insurance...do not mention "coins"...state contents as "collectibles"

Did I miss anything?

Thanks,

Doug

Was it paid for with Paypal? If so, you can print the shipping label thru Paypal online.

Priority Mail Flat Rate is, for my money, the best way to go for a coin of that value. You're going to want Signature Confirmation (required by Paypal for transactions over $250 anyways). I tape the mylar flip between two cardboard pieces about 3"x6", and for a coin of this value or a slabbed coin I'd put that into a small bubble mailer. If not, I snag a Priority Mail paper envelope and wrap it in that. Then the Flat Rate envelope (I don't want to be bothered folding boxes ). I print almost all of my labels thru Paypal, since almost everybody pays that way, and then bring my tape roller to the P.O. to assemble the mailing there.

In short, for $500: Priority Mail, Signature Required, Insured, inside cardboard, inside bubblewrap.

Basically what has already been said. I suggest one more thing though. Place a piece of cardboard on each side of the coins so regardless of how hard you press, you can not feel a coin.
