Hello, I am starting a high grade Ike collection and I would like to know if there are any books that are written on the series. I like to start out by educating myself on the series before jumping in. I know about the different types of the reverse but is there more I need to know about the series. I checked Amazon.com but could not find any books specifically about the series. Thanks for any help and are there more Ike collectors here. small change

There are a few books on the series but they aren't geared toward collectying of them by grade except for Hagar's book; The Accugrade System. The best is The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower dollars by Wexler, Crawford, and Flynn. I'd recommend the Coneca Attribution Guide to Eisenhower dollars but am told this one is nearly impossible to find. A new and more comprehensive reference is sorely needed. This is a most challenging series in high grade. It is also the only modern series where mint sets oten aren't the best place to look for high grade coins. With some dates even decent coins can be quite difficult. Generally these are far scarcer than Morgans and will remain so. Good luck. Have fun.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

The nice part is that a lot of people seem to overlook this set so it may be a little easier to get it than others. The fact that there are not a lot of years, varieties and a descent price for higher grades should make it a funner one to collect as well. Depending on how you want to get it, and how much you want to pay, you may want to check out some of the coin magazines because every now and then they sell the complete sets (but I can not remember for how much). I was just going through another post and a link was provided for something else on the site but I found the following that may help out: http://www.goldeneaglecoin.com/catalog_c65711.htmlI have no idea how high of grade you want but what I could see is that they are all BU for a great price.

Complete BU Ike sets are in the neighborhood of just over $200 but I'd assume the coins are lower grade MS states.

Quote: This is a most challenging series in high grade. And how! My Eisenhower set is far from high grade. My first two coins ever were Eisenhower dollars from my dad, both EF. I started filling in the set while I was young and living off of "paper route" money; high grade was not an option! Many times I have considered building a second high grade set of Ikes, but when I go shopping, I find few choices. Like BobK suggests, many of them are lower MS grades at best. I am content with the set I have, being that I have had it completed for over fifteen years now and I have had the two "oldest" coins in that set for thirty years!

Starting to collect the Ike series is great; I believe as others have mentioned, the series can be difficult to fill in high grade. If you are looking for true high graded Ike's by third grade party graders than Teltrade has many auctions that offer such coins in pcgs or ngc slabs. Note -it can rather it will get pricey.
Certainly you can attend shows or other auction sites to pick up some nice Ikes. Personally I enjoy grading & buying raw Ike's in hopes that my untrained but getting better every day grading eyes will allow me to continually upgrade what I already have which is a mix of graded and raw coins. 1972 type 2 is a dandy of a find in high grade.
All the books mentioned are great as well. Good luck

I find that attending the bigger shows if they are an option for you is an excellent source for knowledge on the series. I was at a Michigan coin show a couple of years back when I just started in on the Ike's and met with the gentleman that currently has the highest PCGS graded set. He spent much time educating me etc... I purchased one of his pcgs graded coins. I was fortunate to have him there at the show. Just another blurb. Try his site www.jmscoins.com

Thanks for all the help and advice. I have been studying teletrade and other auction sites and find that higher grade Ikes are expensive and rare but I am in no hurry to complete the set. I probably will try for the tougher ones first. I will keep everyone posted on my journey. Thanks again
