Hi everyone,

I am new to this coin collecting stuff and I have come across quite a few coins. I have to still sort them out more and look at them more closely and organize the lot but I have lots of questions about lots of coins but this one will be my first one I am posting up. I found this 1981 Nickel and it looks well off to me. On the reverse the Words looks like its got a line crossed through them on the top, then the MONTICELLO the M looks like its a blob only but it also looks like its fading out too. I dont know and then around the whole edge of the reverse theres this funky discolor ring that goes all around the coin. On the Observe "IN GOD WE TRUST" has a line going through it also and the same discoloration all around the edge also. I don't know if these pictures will be of any help with what I am asking but let me know and I shall try to do my best to upload more with a better app on my phone.

If that line is "incused" inwards, then it is damage, most likely from a Coin Wrapping Machine or other vending type of machine. It is a pretty beat up looking coin, they surely don't leave the mint in that shape!

The line you describe, and can be seen in your second pic, is consistent with damage from a machine.

Otherwise, it just looks like an abused coin.

The obverse image is so pixelated I can't see what Is going on with the motto. If the coin looks like that, then face value is all it's worth. But everything else is either damage or from a die that is extremely aged. It in not a mint error if the coin is damaged. It didn't look like that when it was struck.
