I bought the following coin from a VCoins store.
Corinth 375-300 BC, AR Stater
Ancient Coins - Corinth 375-300 BC, AR Stater
Obv: Pegasus flying l, koppa below Rev: Helmeted head of Athena, Artemis with torch behind. Pegasi I p. 268, 451; Ravel 1076, Good Very Fine ( 20 mm , 8.1 Gm )
There are a few things that puzzle me about this coin. Itīs on the light side. 8.13 gr, over 5% lower than the standard 8.6 gr for Corinthian Staters, specially considering itīs good condition. I tested itīs specific gravity and itīs around 9.5, which would be a finesse of under 50%. this alone would explain the low weight.
Paying close attention, I also noticed that the edge does not have the shiny luster of the faces
Paying closer attention to one of the cracks, whatever metal is in there, it does not look like silver (green makes me think copper?):
Al this makes me think of a fourree, although both faces are so shiny clean that I wonder if it could have been plated further ahead in time of just a modern forgery. I would be very interested in your thoughts.
Thanks,
