Strange Brockage 1916 Nickle

This coin just got back from PCGS its in a problem free AU 58 holder. The reverse has what looks to be stars. The only way I can see them being present is a die clash from an Indian gold piece die, has the stars are inset in the coin so the working die would have protruding stars on the die.

Anyway, this coin is not a press job as the coin shows no other issues. Thoughts?

Well the 3 impressions as "Stars" shaped and are not in a straight line, but curved arch. The OB is intact as is the Rev so its not a press job. This coin is also graded AU-58 by PCGS.

I wonder if they used a nickle to protect the dies when setting up the press to run half eagles?

I would venture to say it is coin contact in a bag of nickels. If you match the symmetry and angles the stars appear to be from a Liberty V nickel where contact and weight pressed down angled, not a flat compression as in this diagram:
