I knew nothing about this coin before receiving it. After doing my own research I have ID'd the coin as being described as the following:

1854PTS MJ Bolivia 1 Sol, Silver, KM# 119.1

A few questions/problems I had/have are the following:

1. There is no denomination on the coin.
2. The PM content is not on the coin.
3. What does "PTS" and "MJ" mean?
4. How do I know at which mint it was produced?
5. Is this coin a unique variation or just one of many or not a variation at all?
6. Any clue about the mintage?
7. What grade would this coin potentially receive?
8. Is this coin rare or scarce?

Please, any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

One Sol is the denomination. PTS in monogram form is the mint mark for Potosi, the mint, in modern day Bolivia. MJ are initials of the mint master or assayer, attesting to the quality of the coin. This is one of many such coins made that year. Look in Krause Publications, for mintages, fineness, weight, and values. Krause prints books on coins by century and you want the 19th century (1800 -1899) volume, which I think was last updated in 2016. Countries are listed alphabetically by their modern name, so look for Bolivia. Then they are sorted by denomination so look for Sol. Then by date and mint. Prices are given for a range of grades. Yours has fine details. Good luck with this Numismatic research assignment.

Very nice. Thank you.

Pistareen I shall seek that specific publication. I was unaware of it's existence.

Ahhh. wonderful!

Dorado I've visited the en.numista.com site multiple times but I have never taken the time to really explore it. I took that time today (with your prompting). Very unique and interesting site. Now I'll be able to make better use of it's capabilities and features.

Thank you!
