No substitute for looking at it, pre-1967 for foreign silver, in very general terms. Enjoy. Separate by country and pre-abasement dates.

I started building a list of worldwide key dates, but never got very far.

If you do, let us know!

Cheers,

Most lots you will come across are 1950s and later - usually any silver has been salted in. 95% of coins you are going to find in junk lots will be worth about 1-25 cents each, as most world currency prior to the 1970s is no longer legal tender.

Notable exceptions are:
- Swiss francs going back to the 1880s; still legal tender at about 1:1 with the USD, and silver until the 1960s.
- Japanese 50, 100, and 500 yen; it's usually about 100-125 yen per USD.
- All (West) German marks after 1949 can be exchanged 2:1 for Euro.
- Of course Euro and Canadian coins too!

There are a lot of rare varieties and errors to look for if you really want to, but most are hardly worth the effort.

There are so many things to look for! A comprehensive list is not available. Here are some general comments:

1. You need to learn how to recognize a silver coin from the look of it.
2. Look for current redeemable foreign exchange (larger denominations) of the major economies-like Euros, British pounds, Swiss francs, Canadian....
but even with this you need a local source who will buy them for 50% of the rate for paper.
3. Look for anything pre-WWII in XF+ condition, or pre-wwI in VF+, or anything pre-1800 that is at least VG. check these against the values in a world coin catalogue.

4. Sort them all into countries, and the countries into type. You will soon realize what the common/ modern stuff is, 99% of which has minimal value.
5. large coins (UK penny and bigger) are usually of more interest and are more sellable.

For the most part, it is silver and older (approximately 1940 and older) coins. Take as many clear pictures as you can, particularly of the older coins.
