On an auction I'm trying to read what bidders are doing. The third highest bidder has like seven bids in a row in small increments. Any idea what that is?

Hi,

Yeah, on your 72/72 auction. That is a proxy bid firing up to their max bid,
s***s was leading until c***d placed a max bid of over 405.99. Then g***m placed a max bid of 400.99 and the computer kept raising theirs until g***m hit their max and c***d shows $5 above that, and is the leader at this time. Of course only he and ebay knows how much higher his limit really is. What it shows the underbidders is that he really wants it and is attempting to scare weaklings away to watch another auction someplace. The smart snipers have already decided what single high bid they will place a few seconds before the end, and if they fail, they will move on to the next. If they bid now, it might only be a small amount of maybe $30 more just to see if he limits out, as the end bid is going to be easily over $500 in my opinion.

It looks like it's going well, and much like other 1972 DDO auctions I've watched.

Someone covered c***d, showing his max bid was $425. Yes, I agree with KurtS that it is going similar to most of these. I think you can relax a little.

ya but O***G max is $426.88, if it was higher then his bid would be $430 right now. If someone were to bid $431.88 they would be the high bidder.

Chrsb, True! I noticed that also. It can be entertaining when forum members are the seller or buyer or both. Not to watch the agony! but just more of a personal interest I guess. Maybe o***g is a dealer and going by the sheets which is low on these IMO and will drop out. Gee, a whole day and 6 hrs to go!

I noticed that in the closed ebay live Superior auction that a PCGS 65 Red sold for $700 + 22% buyers fee = $854 and the PCGS guide ( which most think is overvalued) is right on @ $ 850. For the 65RB, it is valued @ $575.

The value of dies 2,3,and 8 seem to be making gains also on ebay. Sometimes the seller is trying to scam someone into thinking it is #1, but even when listed as an alternate die variety, there is a lot of interest.Any thoughts on them?

I would but will be out bid, this will complete somewhere between $650 and $750(maybe $800 depending on interest). If you could show the toning better in the pics I would guess a higher final bid. I remember when you bought this, you should cover your $697 investment. Die 1 and 4 are the ones I am missing for my collection and was shopping for a 1 for awhile, but decided to go in another direction. A little due diligence shows where you will end up-(toning could go in your favor depending on the buyers)

Jim,

Ya I have watched Die#3 go for #1 money, someone will be disappointed when they go to sell that and recover their initial investment. Most of those auctions are a result of ignorance and manipulation. Not everybody owns a Cherry Pickers Guide to see what those number mean on the slab, all they see is DDO. I think FS numbers have changed reciently also, making it even more difficult to tell what is really for sale.

I have been actively looking for a die #4 for ever, I won one only to find out it was not it (the seller refunded the difference to me, very nice guy who stood by his word). If I were to buy a die 1 I would go for a raw one with a return policy to save money. I am confident in my knowledge to differentiate the dies to save a few bucks. I am interested in this auction, if the reverse were toned also I might be more inclined to bid on it.

As for the other dies, some of them are quit nice and are gaining value. Now that PCGS and NGC have started attributing some of these dies and adding them to the registry people are looking to buy them, many who would have never known other dies exist.

Ah, easy to find. I think the inclusion of the PCGS site url is an excellent idea.

It is. The reverse has nice, light purplish-pink toning (in the fields) that I was unable to photograph.

Sorta fun to follow this one!
I imagine someone's lurking in the background, ready to snipe.
So I'll bet in the final minutes this gets up over $600
