Please help me identify this 1974 Lincoln. I can tell if it was struck this way or if it was smashed. Please look at the mint Mark.

Thanks

@chavez, this is a pretty interesting coin--thanks for posting. I have taken the liberty of providing a close up of the area of interest. It is a little fuzzy, but it looks to me like the post that forms the middle of the letter D in the die broke off. That allows the center of the D to be filled up with metal during the striking process. Subsequently, it looks like this took a little hit, causing that angled mark that goes from corner to corner. Filled minmarks are seemingly pretty common, although except for that hit, yours is a particularly nice example in that it seems to fully engulf the mintmark.

Well it looks like it was struck with a broken post. When this happens the area inside of the mint mark will not show up incuse, but because there is a void on the die, it will be raised. Sometimes even higher than the device when the post pulls away a little of the field area. Then it looks like you coin was his with another one make the indent on this area. Not premium, but know what happened, helps you sleep better at night.

It's a mintmark with a broken post. It's very common for those years and doesn't carry any premiums. http://www.error-ref.com/broken-punch/

Nope, it's only worth 1 cent, because it's way too common and is seen on a lot of coins. You can keep it if you want, but there's no premium for it.

It occurs frequently and has no added value beyond being interesting.
