Thanks for the heads up. Interesting orange tint on the 20 dollar coin! While my coin was kept in the dark and didn't react to UV or sunlight I do understand that it was toned artificially. I just don't know how this could ever occur. I collected several NCLTs over the years and that never happened.

Reading and posting on another thread on that subject prompted me to look at my group of 7 coins again... In less than 5 months I now have this phenomenon on the Franklin Carmichael coin:  This is like selective gold plating. Now there is NO WAY I could have done that.  |

Looking on this, I want my set back.
(it went to someone who will appreciate the beauty and not simply store, like I did)
Very nice "mutation". My second favorite coin in the set after Windy Weather.

I still think, that the painted pictures on the COAs responsible for this.

@canadian_coins I have posted this in another thread regarding toning but thought you may want to look at my 2017 in the eyes of the timber wolf 1kg. I have just purchased this a few days ago online from a dealer. Only on the "frosted queen" is showing toning in a haze pattern? Front of the coin seems to have none if not barely any. Do you think this is acceptable due to the coin size and that this would more likely occur on larger format coins? Is this already affecting value? I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures. I'am new to the Coin World please excuse any redundancy in my questions.     |

@jam3z BTW No matter the toning you have a wonderful coin. Ideally I'd want equal toning on both sides but that is just my own preference. I once owned a couple of kilo coins and I don't recall any disparate toning like yours. Would this affect value? Maybe but with so few coins minted it is impossible to predict. And who knows? Toning may develop favorably over time. But you seem to be questioning your purchase which means that you are probably not satisfied. So perhaps you might want to return it for a full refund or exchange if it is still possible. Those coins are readily available on ebay so you should be able to get another one quickly. |

I am satisfied with the coin most definitely it really is a piece to behold. The toning really doesn't take anything away from the coin that would make me question the purchase entirely. I have a feeling that I could see other imperfections in other ways other than just toning if I were to locate replacement. I am now expecting toning in future purchases due to your findings as well as others. Nothing is perfect in this world.

1 year later... 2 more coins show signs of toning... although not as pronounced.  And the golden coin looks just the same... maybe a bit darker.  |

Update: Few more months later... Golden Sumacs appear even more "oxidized".  I'm thinking of selling this coin but I'm not sure if this is going to be taken seriously. Perhaps TPG is needed here. Any thoughts? Edited by canadian_coins

Not in a bad way, but in the sense that most collectors aren't aware of the possibility for such toning and, therefore, are not likely to be searching for one - makes for a difficult selling environment. You could always direct a prospective buyer to the discussions of the coin here on CCF if they question its validity. I don't think paying for TPG certification/encapsulation is going to result in much (if any) financial gain. Just my thoughts...

I'm just thinking that PCGS certification could give it some credence if they were to certify something else than "plating".
But on the other hand I'm wondering what they would grade - maybe a 91 (no grade, questionable color) which would be a very bad thing.
I guess we need to wait and see more samples out there. The toning is so drastic and uniform - on both sides. It's baffling.
