Don't feel so bad. When I was 9 years old and started collecting coins, the only dealer in town sold me details coins that were overgraded. I would save up my allowance and ask for coins for my b-day and Christmas to add to my collection.
After one of my purchases that I can't remember what the occasion was, the dealer talked my mom into buying a white plastic canister of coin cleaner. I can't remember what it was called but the liquid was blue. It was a waste of money and I never dipped any coins into it, thankfully. But it just goes to show the mindset of how things were back then. This was in the late eighties.

Ronzo > Tons of Barber coins have been cleaned in one way or another . They were aggressively used in commerce so they became dirty, worn and abused ,hence the cleaning by non collectors and newbies that didn't know better . Now you can understand why Barber coins with no problems in grades VF or better, are so expensive .
