Another Emperor I did not yet have! AE Antoninianus of Carus (282-283 AD)

Don't have much information from seller ("Ancient Roman Coin" is not very helpful) but appears to match RIC V II-128. Slightly oval flan, reverse looks to have a bit of roughness, but overall it looks in decent shape.

(A far sight better than I will probably look after 1860 years in the ground...)

I don't have a weight or diameter yet, probably 20-21mm.

Obv: IMP C M AVR CARVS PF AVG / radiate, draped and cuirassed bust facing right

Rev: VIRTVS AVGG, Jupiter at left handing globe to Emperor at right.

TR (Tripolis) centered below the two figures; XXI in exergue.

Carus didn't last long as Emperor; he was already 60 when he took the purple and would rule for only two years before he died of natural causes and old age, or, more mythically, when his camp tent caught fire after being struck by lightning. He was succeeded by his sons Numerian and Carinus, both of whom were dead within two years, also under bizarre circumstances.

Hi your Carus Antoninianus is from Tripolis, first emission 283. Did you notice the star in the upperfield?
There are 3 different Carus mintmark-coins from this type.
take a look at this website:

Thanks!

@Eddop -- I did see that in the upper reverse field but did not know that it was a star -- thanks for the information. I will check out that website.

Having Probus and Diocletian I now must look for Carinus and Numerian, somewhat more difficult.

Nice scarcer emperor! Of all the lots I've purchased, I think I have only ever found three of his coins.

Fun tidbit: Along with Gordian II, Carus is one of only two emperors who show a receding hairline on their coins.

New pictures in hand. The coin does have some remaining luster -- it's not nearly as bad as the pictures from seller -- and even a bit of what may be silvering (or silver paint?) in places on the reverse.

The detail photos are taken with bright LED lighting to bring out the sharpness; the photo of the coin in the calipers is more accurate as to color and surfaces. 19mm, 3.3 grams.
