Here's the 1861 $3 coin.
For some reason I can't get the camera to focus on the gold. Maybe my camera is blinded by the light.

I agree with Dave and others, and I'm not even thinking about varieties. Some coins have gone up in value a substantial amount in the last 20 years. Even in the last 10. You mentioned Barbers. Barber quarters? There are probably 3 or 4 of those that are the equivalent of what you have shown thus far as far as rarity and value. Just because it's not in a separate container per se doesn't mean the value has not skyrocketed since the last time someone priced them....

As for the gold picture, try moving farther away from the coin, and then crop and enlarge. Anything over a 3 or 4 megapixel camera probably has the capability to enlarge without losing too much detail.

O_O

I'm thinking a weak strike and MS on that gold. If so, and judging by the coin seeming relatively free from serious marks, um, wow. Very nice.

But I don't do gold, so let the experts chime in if they see wear anywhere. Regardless, that a 4 digit coin, and potentially 5 digits I think.....
Rest in Peace

Very pretty $3 gold robo! It looks to be a solid high XF or maybe AU....though the cleaning would affect the value somewhat. This is one you want to send to ANACS for sure!

I just came from my nephew's graduation party. All the brothers were there. We talked a little about the dispensation of the collection. The oldest wants some, but not passionately. The 2nd wants them all, I want them all, and the youngest couldn't care less. I have to figure out why my other brother wants them all. He doesn't collect coins and I think he just wants to sell them all. I have to figure out a way to divide the collection 3 ways. Probably 2 large portions and one small. I know a coin collection is inanimate but I have to decide what's best for the collection. Any suggestions?
I will toss up a few photo's later.

WOW! What a great collection. I am now sorry that I have taken a few days off from the forum.

You have many coins that are valuable, and many of the others may be diamonds in the rough as well. Varieties are becoming highly collectible, especially with the Morgan dollars. I hope you can post as many pictures of you Morgans as possible. Identifying Morgan varieties is my greatest weakness, it can keep me up for nights on end, it will be nice to have some new coins to look at.

Most of the advice you received here is good, and you appear to be a very sensible person. Take good care of them for us, we are all jealous.

Your second brother "AKA"... ptb wouldn't sell a thing. Just thought you might need some humor, weak humor but humor none the less.

You have a difficult task. One option would be to split the coins up by type. Morgans, commemorative, nickels etc. Obviously you would still need to get the coins appraised so that the values are as equal as possible. I don't know how your relationship is with your brother(s) (and I am not going to do any interpreting as I did with your Uncle's email) Way off!

If you find you must split the collection up, an estate attorney or arbitrator, knowledgeable in coins and there values could help in this regard. Not my or likely your first or best choice. Another thought is if you are correct about the 2nd brother only wanting the cash value - you could offer to compensate him for the coins he would get if the collection was split. You could do the same with your older brother if he shows an interest. "You know one Morgan dollar = 1 dollar bill, one 3-legged Buffalo nickel = 1 nickel etc.

You really do have your hands full with this wonderful collection of coins. Not much help but it is something.

I do know what you are going through though. I was the executor for my parents estate and with four other siblings it was not an easy task. I must add the only coins involved in the estate was the change found under the furniture along with the dust.
Best of luck and keep us posted on how things work out. Surely someone here will have bettor suggestions than this!
