That looks like an 1882 Morgan. Which if it got graded past a MS64 would be worth Much more then 1883. Or I could just be seeing things.

I'll give you my honest opinion for what it's worth. You are in a pickle with having to split up a collection like this. First off, I think it will depend on what that 1893s comes back with for a grade. I think the only way you're going to get this evenly split between all of you will be to sell the entire collection and disperse the cash. I hate to say it. I have had to go through the same thing. Family is family, and I'm not judging anyone, but when money is involved, get everything sorted/valued, sell it all, split the money four ways, and start collecting what you like. Otherwise, someone will not be happy and you take a chance of having issues. Again, this is my opinion only, but it is also from experience.

Here's my plan (stay tuned for the results in 3 or 4 weeks) If I can't acquire the entire set I will try my best to get my brothers to keep the sets together. If someone requests (and offers to pay for) the key morgans, then they will have to pay for ALL the morgans. That way I think I can keep the value highest for the "types". I would love to keep the morgans and try to get a complete set, but if he wants them I would be satisfied with the commemoratives. They are really attractive and I think building a set would be fun and not too hard on the coin purse. Anyway my offering for today is a commemorative olympic set. Nice set. Have you done any steps to have the coins certified? Bought any books?

I had the collection appraised right off the bat, 12-13 thousand dollars.

Robocoin, was the 1893s you sent in to be graded MS? I see the picture, but it was one of the smaller ones. what did the person that sent it in tell you. Also, where did that one get sent anyway? The only reason I ask is that coin alone could be a six figure coin depending on the grade. Check out completed auctions at Heritage for MS63 coins and up......

12-13 thousand for the whole collection ? That is the biggest lowball offer I've seen. Stay away from that guy...can't trust his judgement or his appraisal skills.

I've looked at Heritage Auction web page and the 1893-S Morgans are going for 2-4 thousand (in similar condition). I wish this whole thing was over. I am interested in collecting, but to see these and have to give them up is a bummer. I told my brothers (I hope they listen) that this collection needs to be maintained, not sold. To me, these coins are like art. They should be packaged, and displayed. Taken to shows, not locked up in a safe.

OH, one more thing, I ordered my Red Book from Amazon today. I am going to price all the coins so that the division is equitable. If I get to keep a type I hope to keep the morgans, second choice the commemoratives, third choice the halves and dimes.

As to this turning into a train wreck, it hasn't yet, but if you ever saw the movie parenthood (steve martin), the family was a mess, he had just quit his job, and his wife told him she was pregnant. He was getting ready to take grandma somewhere and she said "Some people go to the amusement park and they like the carousel. It's too slow for me, give me a roller coaster any time, that's a ride". I often remind myself, the roller coaster is for me, leave the carousel for the other folks. I am invigorated by a good challenge. I know thet it will all work out for the best! I like being involved though.

Quote: I've looked at Heritage Auction web page and the 1893-S Morgans are going for 2-4 thousand (in similar condition). Robocoin, I think you may be looking at regular 1893 Morgans, and not the 1893-S. If you modify your search and include -S with the dash being important, and search archives, you will see the light. If any of your photos in the beginning are of the 1893-S, you have at least an AU coin, and probably MS. An AU55 coin sold for 38K yesterday at Heritage. Again, I can't reiterate what others have said enough, DO NOT use the current appraiser for any future help. A VF20 coin is about 4-5K, and your coin is certainly above that. To be honest, what you have shown us so far yields probably 5 or 6 coins that are in the 4-5K range already..... Any more help needed, absolutely feel free to contact me or any of the other staff members via PM at your convenience. Just use the forum email system. I certainly do not want to make you paranoid about the whole thing, but at this point I would trust nobody until I had a very good grasp on the actual value.
