Quote: One thing everyone needs to keep in mind, the professional graders are holding the coin in hand before it's even encapsulated when grading. We are grading coins on line from static photos that may be fairly accurate or may be a mile off the mark versus the real in-hand look. I would trust a grade assigned by PCGS before what my eyes may see in a couple of photos. I agree. Grading in hand is preferred and when buying online the graders had that advantage over us.

Wow. basebal21 now I'm a troll? Sounds like you may be the troll, seeing as your so opinionated and trying to convince others of those opinions!! If your so sure the information I typed is surely untrue than why do you keep coming back? I don't work for the BAU but its pretty evident your trolling.. Hummmmm...

Can't hold any real weight without proof, however I wouldn't find this story being factual all that surprising tbh.

Here is the coin in question. This is a picture prior to when it was finally graded business strike. I asked for a picture for comparison which I'm waiting on.

Will wait for more pics When someone registers on the forum and immediately has a negative attitude towards established companies, we usually want some proof of the story. Just notifying you of that to explain why members are asking for proof of your story.

SilverDollar honestly I personally do lot have a negative attitude toward PCGS or any 3rd party grading Co. for that matter. It just seems that over the past several years the trust & dependability of PCGS mainly is being questioned more & more or so it seems? I still prefer to purchase graded coins but I've been leaning toward NGC myself.. But I fully understand your point. Thank you

Please use them in the future. ***Now to me this is a problem, PCGS claims to take high quality photos (even calling them "Trueview" so they should be good enough to grade the coin from) but the photos are often just useless for evaluating the coin. Blurred images, images of that black contraption they photograph coins on, poorly cropped images, unnatural colour etc. And not just a minute fraction but on thousands of coins (at least 10% of my coins have one or more of those problems). So without decent images then we are left to take the word of PCGS that the grade is accurate (until they change their mind and make a fat fee on the Reconsideration submissions).

I was not referring to PCGS trueviews. I was referring to images of slabbed coins taken by on-line sellers as well as members right here on CCF. I've never owned a coin that was photographed by Phil (yet) so I am not able to make any sort of comment about what I call PCGS glamour shots versus the true in hand look.

In fact, I think that the Trueview pics sometimes make the coin look slightly better than it actually is.

I have found the exact opposite with PCGS's trueview photos. They are among the best I have seen, and I have yet to have any of the issues you are referring to, on several thousand PCGS world coins submitted

Blurred images, images of that black contraption they photograph coins on, poorly cropped images, unnatural colour etc. Those are NOT TruViews. Those are the old secure plus scans which they stopped using several years ago and replaced with TruViews for the secure service. The TruViews do not have those issues. The black snifter images can also be corrected if you email them as that was a cropping issue with the software. You could have the best picture in the world and that wouldn't change that they're professionals. Also you can't rotate coins in pictures which is part of grading it. Quote: It just seems that over the past several years the trust & dependability of PCGS mainly is being questioned more & more or so it seems? No they have become more and more dominate over the past several years for US coins especially coins of value and high end coins.

To me , "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" aptly applies here. Any picture, as good as they may be will Never replace the hands on inspection of a coin. How many buy coins only if there is a return policy strictly from a photo? If you do, you either have money to burn or you are a fool...well, or both!

All my coins with the exception of a very few are purchased on-line from photos. The nearest LCS is a long drive from where I live. I know there are quite a few collectors in the same situation. Edit - I can't even use LCS. It's more like CS for me because they're not local...
