Hello,
Taking a close-up shot with $10.00 worth of working tools.
I am using a family camera for my pictures. It is a Sony VX DSC-W5, 5.1 Mega Pixel. It is one of those point and shoot cameras and even with a Macro there are limitations for close-ups.
I have discovered that you can greatly enhance close-ups with the aid of two 4-inch magnifying lens. You will also need 8 CD covers. Height of a CD cover is 10cm. Lay two CD covers on a flat surface side by side with a distance of 2 to 2.5 inches between them. Position the coin in the middle of the 2 covers and place the 1st lens (minus the handle)on top of the covers. The coin is now magnified to a certain degree. The distance between the coin and the lens is approximately 10cm. Stock 3 more covers on each of the 1st cover and place the 2nd magnifier on top. Make sure that the focal points of the two lenses are directly aligned to the coin. The top magnifier is approximately 30cm from the 1st lens and 40cm from the coin. When taking a picture make sure that the camera is very close or resting lightly on the lens or else you will be taking shots of the set-up instead of the coin. Download the pictures on the computer then zoom.
I played around with the position of the 1st lens and even went as high as 30cm. Funny that at this position the image of the coin is greatly enhance (through the naked eyes) but the shots came out with smaller images! With my camera the former set-up gave the best results. I also tried using one lens. It gave out good results (with no reflexions) but enhancement is lesser. I have not tried with 3 lenses yet.
I have no experience in photography but I know that good pictures come with proper lighting. That's where my problem is. Right now I am using a desk lamp with a Starlux Daylight E27 TriPhosphor Coating 40w (whatever that is). I placed the lamp in various position, cover it with paper napkins, white cloth, etc., but still come out with too much glare and mediocre results. Thanks for ny suggestions.

The photos came out really well considering the equipment.

Hi junjie,

Pretty nice set-up. I'll do this on weekend and see whats come up. I'm having a hard time getting good picture with my coins. I'll just send you a private message of the result. By the way I'm using a IXUS 500 digital camera.

Thanks,

noel biscocho

HI

That is a very interesting set-up. I've tried quite a few different things and I honestly am having a bit of a time getting my pics to zoom as much as I'd like but I have learned 2 very important things. Coins photograph better on a white background. (I use a sheet of blank printer paper. And also if you are having trouble with glare Ihave gotten great results with side lighting instead of from above. I use a desk lamp too, one of the stretchy ones and I just bend it around until the light is on an even level with the coin. oh, and I use a kodak easy share c743 digital camera.

Best of luck

Hi Malissa,
I will try your suggestion over the week. Yes I forgot to mention that even if there is a glare you can still use the image photographed, Just crop out the glare in your computer. The set up really works well. With a good camera you can use just one magnifier.
Thanks for the tips.

Hello Noel & Malissa, Here are some images I took lately. This time I used a lighter background. I could not place the lights on the side because of the set-up. I used natural lights this time and I moved up the 1st lens higher to 30 cm. The results are much better.
