I think I'm going to buy a scanner tonight I wanted to know if any of you have suggestions for picking one out.

I'm having a terribly hard time photographing certain coins, especially toned coins in a slab. Anytime the color, closeness and detail is just right I get awful glare that ruins the shot.

Scanning might not be idea for the really professional shots, but it's simple and I've seen decent results. Any advice?

Older design, single source scanners seem to work better than newer, multiple-lightsource models. Dedicated scanners also seem to work better than multi-function devices. Just a couple of generalizations from my limited experience that may or may not be accurate.

Almost all the pics of coins I post here on the forum and in my CCF gallery are done on an old HP single-source scanner (model: Scanjet 3770). It works well enough on coins in 2x2s, but I've never tried it on a slabbed coin, so I don't know how well it works on them.

OK, so my wife bought an Epson and the images are coming out blurry. The coin is slabbed so the coin off the scanner and out of focus. Any ideas?

Is there an option for custom settings? I had to play with my scanner for a long time before I could get a halfway decent pic. Finally I got a camera.

Is it a CIF scanner? Apparently they have narrow depth of field. Coin in slab could be a problem as it's not flat on the glass.

I used scanner way back, until some 5 yrs ago. My suggestion, buy a cheap one, because most likely you'll want to replace it pretty quick after, (Unless you'll be satisfied just giving a general idea of the coin, without showing is detailed qualities faults)

I bought a scanner last week, a Genius Vivid 1200E-(1200 X 2400 dpi resolution). Don't seem to work well with coins. It is now used to send documents instead.
