Hello everyone,
I've found this penny in circulation years ago and have never really found out what type of error it is. The Lincoln portrait is enlarged and shows "RTY" of LIBERTY and is a bit concave on this side and the reverse is normal nothing wrong with it does anyone have any idea what this is? Thanks in advance!

Struck through die cap? Cool find!

Too bad there is so much corrosion on that coin.

@nickdebronsky, I agree that seeing a pic of the other side would be very useful. We may be able to recommend safe ways to remove that green, but for now, I'd leave it in the 2x2 (just as you have it).

It was Struck Through a Capped Die. Although, that green corrosion probably made your coin lose a lot of value, since it's now a problem coin (most coin collecters don't like problem coins and they avoid buying them. Only people who don't care about problem coins will buy it). http://www.error-ref.com/struck_thr...age_die_cap/

@E&V and @tanman, I'm interested in your thoughts on how some parts of the design elements (e.g. RTY from LIBERTY) seemingly were enlarged on the OP's coin. Is that typical for a Struck Through Capped Die? Not throwing shade on your answer, but rather just trying to learn. Thx!

This is a mid- to late-stage counterbrockage.

Counterbrockage! I wasn't 100% about a struck through cap die. I was also thinking blockage but when I looked that up it showed a mirrored image, I forgot about counterbrockage. I agree this is a counterbrockage, not a struck through die cap.

A counterbrockage is one of many forms of capped die strike. So saying the coin was struck through a die cap wasn't wrong, it was just non-specific.

Because it is struck through the extra thickness of the die cap, it enlarges the devices. That is what we are seeing.

Note the reverse image on the bottom of the die cap. This shows that the Memorial is being enlarged when struck onto the next coins.

That's not correct, Coop. A counterbrockage is generated by a brockage on the working face of the die cap. Anything that bleeds through the floor of a die cap from the die itself will be normal size.

Thanks Mike.

It is through a planchet. Not die die cap. Got it.

Not quite, Coop. The OP's coin was struck by a die cap, just one with a spread-out brockage on its working face. The working face of a die cap can carry a raised design, an incuse design (i.e., a brockage), a mixture of raised and incuse elements (generating a brockage/counterbrockage error), an off-center design, or no design at all (i.e., a uniface die cap). Other patterns exist, or could theoretically exist.
