*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

I just yesterday grabbed this coin.
Upon close inspection it's in my opinion it's about MS50-55.
But it has such a strong discoloration.
it is possibly tarnish but I dont think so?
it's not paint.
Looks to be black with a white almost corrosive outline?
I still think it's a beauty but I'm curious.

Thanks for any replies.

I don't see an option..
Thanks much!!

I believe to rotate your pictures when your full image is first on the screen, prior to hitting 'Crop Image' there are two curved arrows in the top left corner. Rotate right or left.

@SP74, it looks to me like this coin may have been plated and now this surface layer is peeling off. Are you sure that this guy is actually silver? Also, a small thing, but the MS in a grade means "mint state" and once something is circulated then it no longer is mint state. A better way to describe your piece would be "AU50-55", although I will leave it up to others to provide opinions about the grade.

looks harshly cleaned, note the heavy lines throughout especially on the obverse
I'd vote environmental damage to the surface at this point due to the layer of sulfide being stripped from the cleaning
beauty is in the eye of the beholder so that's good news

Correct. You have to hover over the upper left corner of the image to get the rotate tools.

This coin has been harshly cleaned. Hairlines on both obverse and reverse. The strange coloration reduces the eye appeal to a very low level. This would grade AU Details.

Anything that reacts with the metal can cause a discoloration. being able to tell you the specific compound that causes the discoloration on any specific coin is probably not possible, at least without detailed chemical analysis. In general most things that react with silver and sulfur or chlorine bearing compounds or nitrates.

Still sort of a nice looking coin.
And you could simply tell people to just lay their monitors on the side.
