Hi all,
I just won this coin in a Swiss auction. I absolutely love the portrait on this coin. This will be my fourth denarius of Galba. I seem to be falling for these Spanish denarii of Galba.
Here is where I need your help. I know this is a very rare coin. Someone on another board found one that sold from Gorny & Mosch in 2004. The combination of this reverse with the obverse legend does not seem to exist in any online database I have checked.
The bust has the globe terminus which I believe indicates a Spanish mint. The problem is that on the Virtus reverses of these coins "Virtus" is written on the left side of the figure and not on the right as is the case with my coin. I have found examples with "Virtus" written on the right but these coins were not minted in Spain, they were minted in Gaul and Carthage.
So, this seems to be a previously unpublished variant.
Would you be so kind as to check your references for this coin? I would really appreciate it.
Here is a photo that explains why I am smiling ear to ear today.
Please feel free to post your coins of Galba.
