Well, I was poking through a roll of dimes at work today, and I found one '64 silver, and another dime that I don't know what to think about...
It's a 1993 S dime, but on the edges, it's silver all the way through, no copper-core... The only thing that pops into my mind is that it is a counterfeit... but, who counterfeits dimes? O.o
Beyond that little anomaly, the dime looks perfectly normal, if not a little bit less shiny. It kind of has the same sheen to it as a silver dime, but that could just be from natural circulation. The reeding on the edges is nice and sharp, it doesn't have those clipped corners I've heard of on most counterfeits.
I'll get a scan up as soon as I can get my scanner working again... piece of junk...

Not an error or counterfeit. Just a silver dime that escaped from a silver proof set. Good find from circulation. U.S. mint started the silver set in 1992.

Yay for thread necromancy!
Quick question, is there anything that differenciates a proof dime from a regular dime besides the polished fields? The dime in question doesn't have the same high-lustre I would expect from a proof set. Any chance it could be an error, a regular dime punched on a silver planchet?

The 1993-s-mints only came out in the proof sets.

Quote: Quick question, is there anything that differenciates a proof dime from a regular dime besides the polished fields? Umm, yeah- the S mint mark. Business strike S dimes haven't been minted since 1955 so any newer S mint dime has to be a proof. Also, I would not say for certain that the 1993 is silver without weighing it- it could still be just a clad proof.
