I was at my local coin shop the other day and bought a
"bulk random world silver" coin lot, this interesting one was in the pile.

I got pretty excited when I saw the date on the coin! ...But I calmed myself down and realized that this flawless coin was probably not 240 years old, heh.

Googling "Maria Theresa 1780 Thaler" lead me down quite the rabbit hole. I see it's quite the popular design, even has its own Wikipedia page!

So after reading that they've been making this "frozen date" coin continuously and in different countries/mints for nearly 250 years, I was wondering if this particular one might be special in any way, and if there's a way to tell them apart, like ones made in the 1800's versus a modern one. Thank you!

@Johnathan55, there have been many very good CCF threads on this subject in the past. If you use the search box with the keywords MARIA THERESA, you will be able to go through them and learn a bunch, but here is a link to one of the best IMO:

Also, consider checking out this website, which is wholly devoted to these pieces:

Beautiful coin and photos! After looking through the second website listed above (very helpful, Spence!) I managed to identify my two copies, which are both identical to yours. With the obverse initials S.F., that particular brooch and shield design, and that style of cross after the date this is a restrike made in 1940-1942 at either Bombay or Calcutta (Hafner type 64 or 65). The website doesn't provide a way to distinguish between these two mints.

Thank you both for the replies! Wow, 1940's, from the nice surface I would have thought the coin was ten years old at the most, that's amazing.

I'm going to double check its authenticity with some digital calipers and a weight scale, Do the diameters/weights of these thalers fluctuate at all from the original 1780's design, or are they the same from 1780 to now? I looked all over the website and could not find this info.
