Hello all,

I recently bought the attached the attached coin. I don't normally buy unknowns but it has intrigued me as I cannot identify it. Anyone who is able to help, your assistance would be gratefully received.

I have made a number of assumptions;that the coin is Westphalian and late 12th to early 13th century. On the obverse, the long tails of the bishop's mitre are more common on mid-13th century coins, however the church building on the reverse is more stylistically 12th century. The church building design I have not come across before, however shares most elements with Cologne pennies of the period (But also has common elements with some Mainz/ other bishopric coins of the period).

Weight:0.68g
Diameter: 13mm

Maybe Münster? I can check my Ilisch tomorrow.

Reminds me of a denar of the sort issued in the late 12th c. in Cologne but at 13mm it is way undersized and more likely to be an Obol or a Dünnpfennig.

I don't think Mainz; perhaps Aachen, though, or Erfurt.

I'm sorry @The_kipunji, but I'm coming up with nothing other than a bunch of places that I have ruled out. That list includes Muenster, Bavaria, Augsburg, Regensburg, Passau, and Nurnberg. And yet, I'm still pretty confident (and agree with you) that it is from a Germanic Bishopric or Archbishopric and dates to the late 12th or perhaps early 13th Century. That interesting quadrilobular cross is similar to some Pfennige from Muenster (cf. Ilisch IX.1), but again, I can't quite get a match in which I have confidence.

Added: just checked Cologne and not match, but similar crosses too.

I wonder if it's a contemporary counterfeit issue, which could explain the deliberately crude obverse and the "close, but not quite" reverse.

So many bishoprics, so little time!
Trier, Speyer, Strasbourg, Osnabruck, Freising ...
Salzburg

I cant find anything similar in Numista for these places, but it probably just scratches the surface.

Thank you for your efforts. The puzzle was worth the purchase, it seems. I have started looking at Dutch and Belgian issues and, again, some similarities but no match. Paralyse may be right, it may be a contemporary counterfeit, although I disagree about the obverse being an indication of this as there are plenty of comparable examples (Corvey / Lippe/ Cologne and so on). That said, there are so many possibilities that it equally could be issued by one if the more obscure Abbey mints. Probably in two years time I will come across the answer in an auction catalogue just by chance
